वस्ल का दिन और इतना मुख़्तसर 

दिन गिने जाते थे इस दिन के लिए 

A day of meeting and is so short !

सुब्ह का सोना जो हाथ आता 'अमीर' 

भेजते तोहफ़ा मोअज़्ज़िन के लिए

'Ameer! If I slept till morn', 'd send.

उस की हसरत है जिसे दिल से मिटा भी न सकूँ

It's her desire that I can't wipe from core. 

Going in her quest, whom I can't procure. 

डाल के ख़ाक मेरे ख़ून पे क़ातिल ने कहा

कुछ ये मेंहदी नहीं मेरी कि छुपा भी न सकूँ 

Covering me with dust, the assassin said. 

It's not my henna, that I can not obscure. 

ज़ब्त कम-बख़्त ने याँ आ के गला घोंटा है

कि उसे हाल सुनाऊँ तो सुना भी न सकूँ 

 

Control has asphyxiated me over here. 

Even if I want can't tell her the love-lore. 

नक़्श-ए-पा देख तो लूँ लाख करूँगा सज्दे

सर मिरा अर्श नहीं है कि झुका भी न सकूँ 

I'll genuflex, first let me see footprints. 

My head isn't sky that I can't bend more.

इंशा'-जी उठो अब कूच करो इस शहर में जी को लगाना क्या 

वहशी को सुकूँ से क्या मतलब जोगी का नगर में ठिकाना क्या 

इस दिल के दरीदा दामन को देखो तो सही सोचो तो सही 

जिस झोली में सौ छेद हुए उस झोली का फैलाना क्या 

शब बीती चाँद भी डूब चला ज़ंजीर पड़ी दरवाज़े में 

क्यूँ देर गए घर आए हो सजनी से करोगे बहाना क्या 

फिर हिज्र की लम्बी रात मियाँ संजोग की तो यही एक घड़ी 

जो दिल में है लब पर आने दो शर्माना क्या घबराना क्या 

उस रोज़ जो उन को देखा है अब ख़्वाब का आलम लगता है 

उस रोज़ जो उन से बात हुई वो बात भी थी अफ़साना क्या 

उस हुस्न के सच्चे मोती को हम देख सकें पर छू न सकें 

जिसे देख सकें पर छू न सकें वो दौलत क्या वो ख़ज़ाना क्या 

उस को भी जला दुखते हुए मन इक शो'ला लाल भबूका बन 

यूँ आँसू बन बह जाना क्या यूँ माटी में मिल जाना क्या 

जब शहर के लोग न रस्ता दें क्यूँ बन में न जा बिसराम करे 

दीवानों की सी न बात करे तो और करे दीवाना क्या

My eyes will long for sleep.

when dreams befriend that liar. 

हम बहुत दूर थे मगर तुम ने

दिल की आवाज़ तो सुनी होगी 

We were very far but to you. 

Sounds reached heart sans wire. 

सोचता हूँ कि वो कहाँ होगा 

किस के आँगन में चाँदनी होगी 

Whose home has moonlight? 

I think, where will she retire?

ग़ज़ब किया तिरे वा'दे पे ए'तिबार किया 

तमाम रात क़यामत का इंतिज़ार किया

Your promise was outrage,but I did believe. 

Awaited night long like doomsday reprieve. 

तुझे तो वादा-ए-दीदार हम से करना था 

ये क्या किया कि जहाँ को उमीद-वार किया 

Your promise for a glance was to be with me. 

Why did you involve whole world to conceive? 

ये दिल को ताब कहाँ है कि हो मआल-अंदेश 

उन्हों ने वा'दा किया हम ने ए'तिबार किया 

Has heart the capacity to forethink result? 

She made a promise, I was bound to believe. 

तड़प फिर ऐ दिल-ए-नादाँ कि ग़ैर कहते हैं 

अख़ीर कुछ न बनी सब्र इख़्तियार किया. 

Agitate O gentle heart for the rivals claim. 

Kept patience as nothing could he achieve. 

भुला भुला के जताया है उन को राज़-ए-निहाँ 

छुपा छुपा के मोहब्बत को आश्कार किया 

First I concealed, then gradually revealed. 

For telling her the secret, I had to deceive. 

न उस के दिल से मिटाया कि साफ़ हो जाता 

सबा ने ख़ाक परेशाँ मिरा ग़ुबार किया

It wasn't erased from her heart to be cleared. 

Breeze spread my dust, nothing to achieve ! 

हम ऐसे महव-ए-नज़ारा न थे जो होश आता 

मगर तुम्हारे तग़ाफ़ुल ने होशियार किया 

I wasn't so lost in her looks, to be conscious. 

But your neglect just alerted me to conceive. 

हुआ है कोई मगर उस का चाहने वाला 

कि आसमाँ ने तिरा शेवा इख़्तियार किया

Someone has finally decided to like her too. 

At last, the skies could your habit achieve. 

न पूछ दिल की हक़ीक़त मगर ये कहते हैं 

वो बे-क़रार रहे जिस ने बे-क़रार किया 

One who made me restless be restless too. 

Don't ask me truth or heart, but I conceive .

We are prisoners of distance despite being near. 

How freely are we imprisoned in our limits O dear!

कौन सी आँखों में मेरे ख़्वाब रौशन हैं अभी

किस की नींदें हैं जो मेरे रतजगों में क़ैद हैं

In which eyes are my dreams still glowing?

Whose sleep do my night awake eyes still wear?

शहर आबादी से ख़ाली हो गए ख़ुशबू से फूल

और कितनी ख़्वाहिशें हैं जो दिलों में क़ैद हैं

Cities lack people as flowers lack fragrance. 

To so many desires our hearts still adhere. 

पाँव में रिश्तों की ज़ंजीरें हैं दिल में ख़ौफ़ है

ऐसा लगता है कि हम अपने घरों में क़ैद हैं 

We are under house arrest, it so appears. 

Feet are chained in relations 'n hearts in fear. 

ये ज़मीं यूँ ही सिकुड़ती जाएगी और एक दिन 

फैल जाएँगे जो तूफ़ाँ साहिलों में क़ैद हैं 

This earth will keep shrinking' n then one day. 

Typhoons confined to shores 'll break the sphere. 

इस जज़ीरे पर अज़ल से ख़ाक उड़ती है हवा

मंज़िलों में भेद फिर भी रास्तों में क़ैद हैं 

O wind! Dust blows on this island since start. 

Still the secrets of goal, to lanes do adhere. 

कौन ये पाताल से उभरा किनारे पर' सलीम '

सरफिरी मौजें अभी तक दायरों में क़ैद हैं 

Who has emerged from depth to shore O 'Saleem'? 

Voilent waves are still confined and sincere.

What a lovely sin I am committing this way. 

दुनिया-ए-दिल तबाह किए जा रहा हूँ मैं 

सर्फ़-ए-निगाह-ओ-आह किए जा रहा हूँ मैं 

Spending the finnesse of eyes and sighs. 

I am destroying the world of heart in a way. 

फ़र्द-ए-अमल सियाह किए जा रहा हूँ मै

रहमत को बे-पनाह किए जा रहा हूँ मैं 

I am darkening man's name to that extent. 

 Almighty's boundless appeals so to say. 

ऐसी भी इक निगाह किए जा रहा हूँ मैं 

ज़र्रों को मेहर-ओ-माह किए जा रहा हूँ मैं 

Shaping dust particles  to sun and moon. 

I am casting even such a glance in a way. 

मुझ से लगे हैं इश्क़ की अज़्मत को चार चाँद 

ख़ुद हुस्न को गवाह किए जा रहा हूँ मैं 

With me, pride of love has grown four fold. 

Witness to it is the beauty herself my way. 

दफ़्तर है एक मानी-ए-बे-लफ़्ज़-ओ-सौत का 

सादा सी जो निगाह किए जा रहा हूँ मैं 

A site for meaning without words or sound. 

A simple, straight look that I cast her way. 

आगे क़दम बढ़ाएँ जिन्हें सूझता नहीं 

रौशन चराग़-ए-राह किए जा रहा हूँ मैं 

Those who couldn't see, well now go ahead. 

I am placing lamps to brighten the way. 

मासूमी-ए-जमाल को भी जिन पे रश्क है 

ऐसे भी कुछ गुनाह किए जा रहा हूँ मैं 

Even innocence of beauty is envious of it. 

I am  also committing such sins my way. 

तन्क़ीद-ए-हुस्न मस्लहत-ए-ख़ास-ए-इश्क़ है 

ये जुर्म गाह गाह किए जा रहा हूँ मैं 

Criticism of beauty is a measure of love. 

I commit this crime now 'n then anyway. 

उठती नहीं है आँख मगर उस के रू-ब-रू 

नादीदा इक निगाह किए जा रहा हूँ मैं 

Although I can not even face her straight. 

I am casting an unaware glance her way. 

गुलशन-परस्त हूँ मुझे गुल ही नहीं अज़ीज़ 

काँटों से भी निबाह किए जा रहा हूँ मैं 

A garden lover, I don't love only flowers. 

I get along well with the thorns, so to say. 

यूँ ज़िंदगी गुज़ार रहा हूँ तिरे बग़ैर 

जैसे कोई गुनाह किए जा रहा हूँ मैं 

As if I an committing a sin all along. 

Without you, I am passing life this way. 

मुझ से अदा हुआ है 'जिगर' जुस्तुजू का हक़ 

हर ज़र्रे को गवाह किए जा रहा हूँ मैं

O 'Jigar' I have paid the price for search.

What's the state 'n showing what? 

बन जाएँगे ज़हर पीते - पीते 

ये अश्क जो पीते जा रहे हो 

These will gradually be poison. 

Tears, that you are sipping a lot. 

जिन ज़ख़्मों को वक़्त भर चुका है 

तुम क्यों उन्हें छेड़े जा रहे हो

The wounds that time has healed. 

Why are you teasing the spot?

रेखाओं का खेल है मुक़द्दर 

रेखाओं से मात खा रहे हो

Destiny is a game of lines. 

In lines, you are losing the slot.

ये इंसाँ के दुश्मन समाजों की दुनिया

ये दौलत के भूके रिवाज़ों की दुनिया

This world of palaces, thrones and crowns.

This world of human society enemies frowns.

This world of money hungry systems with downs.

इन में शामिल है तिरे और मिरे अजदाद का ख़ूँ

These tomb buildings, boundaries of fort. 

Pillars of dictatorial glory which report. 

 Wounds, festering wounds on chest of time! 

With blood of our ancestors mingled sublime.

जिन की सन्नाई ने बख़्शी है इसे शक्ल-ए-जमील

These gardens, palaces on Jamuna bank. 

These carved walls, minerettes, the flank. 

Supported by money an emperor had done. 

Humiliated love of us poor, made public fun.
