आज दो रेल की पटरियों की तरह

our message rode on waves that roar.
Today we are like railway lines
that stay nearby but talk no more.
न जी भर के देखा न कुछ बात की
बड़ी आरज़ू थी मुलाक़ात की
Neither saw you in full measure,
nor talked with pleasure.
I always had this desire,

कुछ तो मजबूरियाँ रही होंगी
यूँ कोई बेवफ़ा नहीं होता
Some compulsions must have been on stake.
No one can be disloyal, just for it's sake.
ज़िंदगी तू ने मुझे क़ब्र से कम दी है ज़मीं
पाँव फैलाऊँ तो दीवार में सर लगता है
O life you allotted me space, lesser than
the grave, so small.
When I stretch the legs, my head bangs against the wall.
बड़े लोगों से मिलने में हमेशा फ़ासला रखना
जहाँ दरिया समुंदर से मिला दरिया नहीं रहता
When you meet big persons in life,
maintain some distance in strife. #
When a river meets with the sea,
the river just ceases to be.
दुश्मनी जम कर करो लेकिन ये गुंजाइश रहे
जब कभी हम दोस्त हो जाएँ तो शर्मिंदा न हों
Let enmity be on full scale,
but let there be space to regale. #
Later when we become friends,
let there be no shameful ammends.
मोहब्बतों में दिखावे की दोस्ती न मिला
अगर गले नहीं मिलता तो हाथ भी न मिला
In love, don't mix friendship for show
sake.
If you can't embrace, let there be no handshake.
यहाँ लिबास की क़ीमत है आदमी की नहीं
मुझे गिलास बड़े दे शराब कम कर दे
What matters here is his get up and not the man.
Reduce my drink measure, but serve in big can.
मुसाफ़िर हैं हम भी मुसाफ़िर हो तुम भी
किसी मोड़ पर फिर मुलाक़ात होगी
You are also a traveller and so am I.

उम्रें बीत जाती हैं दिल को दिल बनाने में
People think that every throbbing stone is
a heart.
It takes many lives to shape a heart as the heart.
तुम मोहब्बत को खेल कहते हो
हम ने बर्बाद ज़िंदगी कर ली
You say that love is just a game.
I 've ruined my life for the same.
कोई हाथ भी न मिलाएगा जो गले मिलोगे तपाक से
ये नए मिज़ाज का शहर है ज़रा फ़ासले से मिला करो
None will even shake hand,
if you embrace offhand.
It's a city of new style,
keep distance all the while.
इतनी मिलती है मिरी ग़ज़लों से सूरत तेरी
लोग तुझ को मिरा महबूब समझते होंगे
My ghazals and your face resemble so much.
People will be calling you my lover as such.
ख़ुदा की इतनी बड़ी काएनात में मैं ने
बस एक शख़्स को माँगा मुझे वही न मिला
In this world which is stretched so far and wide.
I asked for one person, God couldn't provide.
तुम मुझे छोड़ के जाओगे तो मर जाऊँगा
यूँ करो जाने से पहले मुझे पागल कर दो
I will die, if you leave me and go.
Make me a lunatic before you go.
हम तो कुछ देर हँस भी लेते हैं
दिल हमेशा उदास रहता है
Sometimes I smile,
once in a while.
But heart sublime,
is sad all the time.
सर झुकाओगे तो पत्थर देवता हो जाएगा
इतना मत चाहो उसे वो बेवफ़ा हो जाएगा
If you bow your head,
stone 'll be God instead.
Don't like him so much,
he' ll be faithless as such.
हसीं तो और हैं लेकिन कोई कहाँ तुझ सा
जो दिल जलाए बहुत फिर भी दिलरुबा ही लगे
There are many a lovely cutie,
but who can match you in beauty.
One who sets the heart on fire,
yet retains the longing desire.
पत्थर मुझे कहता है मिरा चाहने वाला
मैं मोम हूँ उस ने मुझे छू कर नहीं देखा
One who loves me, calls me a stone.
I am wax, he did not touch me alone.
मैं जब सो जाऊँ इन आँखों पे अपने होंट रख देना
यक़ीं आ जाएगा पलकों तले भी दिल धड़कता है
When I sleep, O mate! On my eyes,keep your shapely lips
A heart throbs under eyelashes, I' ll be sure, without tips.
पत्थर के जिगर वालो ग़म में वो रवानी है
ख़ुद राह बना लेगा बहता हुआ पानी है
O stone hearted men!
Grief has it's own flow then.
Carves path of it's own,
the flow of water is on.
शोहरत की बुलंदी भी पल भर का तमाशा है
जिस डाल पे बैठे हो वो टूट भी
लोगlहिन्दी peak of fame is a moment's facade.
The branch you sit on, can break,delayed.
टूट जाते हैं एक घर बनाने में
तुम तरस नहीं खाते बस्तियाँ जलाने में
People get broken erecting a house to live in.
Setting afire hutments, you don't hesitate within.
इसी लिए तो यहाँ अब भी अजनबी हूँ मैं
तमाम लोग फ़रिश्ते हैं आदमी हूँ मैं
That's why I am still a strange one here.
Every one is an angel, I am human here.
तुम्हें ज़रूर कोई चाहतों से देखेगा
मगर वो आँखें हमारी कहाँ से लाएगा
Someone will watch you with fond ties.
But wherefrom 'll he get my longing eyes?
उड़ने दो परिंदों को अभी शोख़ हवा में
फिर लौट के बचपन के ज़माने नहीं आते
Let birds fly in wanton wind' n find.
Childhood days! You can't rewind.
वो चेहरा किताबी रहा सामने
बड़ी ख़ूबसूरत पढ़ाई हुई
That bookish face was before eyes.
A beautiful study was there as prize.
दुश्मनी का सफ़र इक क़दम दो क़दम
तुम भी थक जाओगे हम भी थक जाएँगे
Journey of enmity is a step or two.
You will get tired and me too.
सात संदूक़ों में भर कर दफ़्न कर दो नफ़रतें
आज इंसाँ को मोहब्बत की ज़रूरत है बहुत
Chain in seven boxes 'n bury hate deep.
Today humans need only love to keep.
घरों पे नाम थे नामों के साथ ओहदे थे
बहुत तलाश किया कोई आदमी न मिला
Houses were named, tagged with title as well
I searched a lot, didn't a get man in this spell.
भूल शायद बहुत बड़ी कर ली
दिल ने दुनिया से दोस्ती कर ली
Probably I committed a very big mistake.
Heart made friends with world for it's sake.
भला हम मिले भी तो क्या मिले वही दूरियाँ वही फ़ासले
न कभी हमारे क़दम बढ़े न कभी तुम्हारी झिजक गई
What if we have met,
same distance in between is set.
Neither a step I could proceed,
nor your hesitation went indeed.
अगर तलाश करूँ कोई मिल ही जाएगा
मगर तुम्हारी तरह कौन मुझ को चाहेगा
On search , me too would get someone
But who will like me as you have done ?
अगर फ़ुर्सत मिले पानी की तहरीरों को पढ़ लेना
हर इक दरिया हज़ारों साल का अफ़्साना लिखता है
If there is some time of leisure,
read what's kept on water as treasure.

अभी राह में कई मोड़ हैं कोई आएगा कोई जाएगा
तुम्हें जिस ने दिल से भुला दिया उसे भूलने की दुआ करो
There are many turns on the way,
someone 'll come, some move away.
One who erased you from heart,
pray to forget that one from start.
ख़ुदा ऐसे एहसास का नाम है
रहे सामने और दिखाई न दे
God is the name of a feeling as such.
He confronts but can't be seen as such.
मोहब्बत एक ख़ुशबू है हमेशा साथ चलती है
कोई इंसान तन्हाई में भी तन्हा नहीं रहता
Love is a fragrance, always moves with you.
Even in solitude, no one is alone to pursue.
न तुम होश में हो न हम होश में हैं
चलो मय-कदे में वहीं बात होगी
Neither you are in senses, nor am I.
Let's go to tavern 'n talk on a high.
कभी कभी तो छलक पड़ती हैं यूँही आँखें
उदास होने का कोई सबब नहीं होता
At times,the eyes just simply overflow.
To be sad, it needs no reason, you know.
आँखों में रहा दिल में उतर कर नहीं देखा
कश्ती के मुसाफ़िर ने समुंदर नहीं देखा
It stayed in the eyes, didn't step in heart.
Boat traveller never saw wide ocean part.
इसी शहर में कई साल से मिरे कुछ क़रीबी अज़ीज़ हैं
उन्हें मेरी कोई ख़बर नहीं मुझे उन का कोई पता नहीं
For years in this town,
are relatives close down.
They haven't known me,
for me, they ceased to be.
जी बहुत चाहता है सच बोलें
क्या करें हौसला नहीं होता
To speak only the truth , I want a lot.
What to do, my courage isn't in that slot.
अजीब शख़्स है नाराज़ हो के हँसता है
मैं चाहता हूँ ख़फ़ा हो तो वो ख़फ़ा ही लगे
That man is so strange,
laughs in unpleasant range.
I want him to look angry,
when he is really angry.
अजब चराग़ हूँ दिन रात जलता रहता हूँ
मैं थक गया हूँ हवा से कहो बुझाए मुझे
I am a strange lamp in sight,
keep burning day and night.
Now I have got tired about ,
ask the wind to put me out.
आशिक़ी में बहुत ज़रूरी है
बेवफ़ाई कभी कभी करना
It's essential that in love sublime.
To be faithless from time to time.
कभी तो आसमाँ से चाँद उतरे जाम हो जाए
तुम्हारे नाम की इक ख़ूब-सूरत शाम हो जाए
Let moon step down from sky,
be a wine cup for a high
Let there be in your name,
a beautiful eve' in the game.
बहुत दिनों से मिरे साथ थी मगर कल शाम
मुझे पता चला वो कितनी ख़ूबसूरत है
Since long we were together,
but last eve' I could gather.
Came to know for sure,
how beautiful she is to allure.
है अजीब शहर की ज़िंदगी न सफ़र रहा न क़याम है
कहीं कारोबार सी दोपहर कहीं बद-मिज़ाज सी शाम है
City life is so strange,
no travel no goal in range.
There is business like noon,
a bad mood eve' so soon.
दिल की बस्ती पुरानी दिल्ली है
जो भी गुज़रा है उस ने लूटा है
Like old Delhi is this city of heart.
Each passer by plundered on his part.
गुफ़्तुगू उन से रोज़ होती है
मुद्दतों सामना नहीं होता
Daily we talk like a song.
Didn't confront since long.
एक औरत से वफ़ा करने का ये तोहफ़ा मिला
जाने कितनी औरतों की बद-दुआएँ साथ हैं
Being faithful to a woman I got this gift.
Ill will from so many accompany in shift.
महक रही है ज़मीं चाँदनी के फूलों से
ख़ुदा किसी की मोहब्बत पे मुस्कुराया है
Moonlight flowers impart fragrance to earth.
God has smiled on someone ''s love with
mirth.
न उदास हो न मलाल कर, किसी बात का न ख़याल कर
कई साल ब'अद मिले हैं हम, तेरे नाम आज की शाम है
Don't feel sad, don't regret,
don't think about anything as yet.
We have met after many years,

रोने वालों ने उठा रक्खा था घर सर पर मगर
उम्र भर का जागने वाला पड़ा सोता रहा
Those who were near cried,
had house on head or tried.

कभी मैं अपने हाथों की लकीरों से नहीं उलझा

जिस दिन से चला हूँ मिरी मंज़िल पे नज़र है
आँखों ने कभी मील का पत्थर नहीं देखा

उतर भी आओ कभी आसमाँ के ज़ीने से
तुम्हें ख़ुदा ने हमारे लिए बनाया है

from the sky layers.
Almighty has cast

अच्छा तुम्हारे शहर का दस्तूर हो गया
जिस को गले लगा लिया वो दूर हो गया
This is a fine system of your town
Whoever I embrace, goes out 'n down
उस की आँखों को ग़ौर से देखो
मंदिरों में चराग़ जलते हैं

Within temple are shining lamps of a kind.
उन्हीं रास्तों ने जिन पर कभी तुम थे साथ मेरे
मुझे रोक रोक पूछा तिरा हम-सफ़र कहाँ है
The tracks on which you had walked with me.

मैं बोलता हूँ तो इल्ज़ाम है बग़ावत का
मैं चुप रहूँ तो बड़ी बेबसी सी होती है

चाँद सा मिस्रा अकेला है मिरे काग़ज़ पर
छत पे आ जाओ मिरा शेर मुकम्मल कर दो
A moon like sentence, stands on paper so alone.
You come to terrace, complete couplet full blown.
तुम्हारे साथ ये मौसम फ़रिश्तों जैसा है
तुम्हारे बा'द ये मौसम बहुत सताएगा
When you are with me, the weather has angelic tone.
This weather will trouble me when you are gone.
बहुत अजीब है ये क़ुर्बतों की दूरी भी
वो मेरे साथ रहा और मुझे कभी न मिला
This distance in nearness is very strange.
He was with me but never met within range.
कभी तो शाम ढले अपने घर गए होते
किसी की आँख में रह कर सँवर गए होते
Someday you should have gone home, when evening was over.
You could stay in someone's eyes and get a caring blower.
मैं चाहता हूँ कि तुम ही मुझे इजाज़त दो
तुम्हारी तरह से कोई गले लगाए मुझे
I wish that you permit me to do that much.
Let someone embrace me like you as such.
पहली बार नज़रों ने चाँद बोलते देखा
हम जवाब क्या देते खो गए सवालों में

I roamed from lane to lane,
in your search 'n desire gain.

which scattered simply to redress.
मैं तमाम दिन का थका हुआ तू तमाम शब का जगा हुआ
ज़रा ठहर जा इसी मोड़ पर तेरे साथ शाम गुज़ार लूँ

These days, what isn't done in broad daylight?
लहजा कि जैसे सुब्ह की ख़ुश्बू अज़ान दे
जी चाहता है मैं तिरी आवाज़ चूम लूँ
Tone is like morn' fragrance on prayer call.
My heart likes to kiss your voice after all.
ख़ुदा की उस के गले में अजीब क़ुदरत है
वो बोलता है तो इक रौशनी सी होती है
God has given a strange nature in his voice.
There is a glow when he speaks, no choice.
हम दिल्ली भी हो आए हैं लाहौर भी घूमे
ऐ यार मगर तेरी गली तेरी गली है
I have been to Delhi, roamed in Lahore as well.
O lover! But your lane casts so unique a spell.
वो जिन के ज़िक्र से रगों में दौड़ती थीं बिजलियाँ
उन्हीं का हाथ हम ने छू के देखा कितना सर्द है
Whose mention sparked currents in my veins as such
Today her hand was found to be so cold to touch.
मोहब्बत अदावत वफ़ा बे-रुख़ी
किराए के घर थे बदलते रहे
Love, enmity, faith and neglect too much.
Were rented flats, to be changed as such.
सब लोग अपने अपने ख़ुदाओं को लाए थे
इक हम ही ऐसे थे कि हमारा ख़ुदा न था
All persons brought gods with them
I had no God to hold his hem.
नए दौर के नए ख़्वाब हैं नए मौसमों के गुलाब हैं
ये मोहब्बतों के चराग़ हैं इन्हें नफ़रतों की हवा न दे
These are new age dreams,
new season roses, it seems.

अजीब रात थी कल तुम भी आ के लौट गए
जब आ गए थे तो पल भर ठहर गए होते

फिर याद बहुत आएगी ज़ुल्फ़ों की घनी शाम
जब धूप में साया कोई सर पर न मिलेगा
I will remember then, dense eve' of your tress laid.
When over head from the sun,there will be no shade
इस शहर के बादल तिरी ज़ुल्फ़ों की तरह हैं
ये आग लगाते हैं बुझाने नहीं आते
This city clouds are as your tress O spouse!
These set afire,but do not care to douse.
हक़ीक़तों में ज़माना बहुत गुज़ार चुके
कोई कहानी सुनाओ बड़ा अँधेरा है
Quite a life is spent
in truths unbent.

it is stark dark..
उस ने छू कर मुझे पत्थर से फिर इंसान किया
मुद्दतों बअ'द मिरी आँखों में आँसू आए
She touched and turned me to man from stone.
After so long, tears from my eyes have
flown.
मैं ने दिन रात ख़ुदा से ये दुआ माँगी थी
कोई आहट न हो दर पर मिरे जब तू आए
For night and day,
from Him did I pray.
Not even a faint sound,
when you are around.
ये फूल मुझे कोई विरासत में मिले हैं
तुम ने मिरा काँटों भरा बिस्तर नहीं देखा
Are these flowers my ancestral gift?
You didn't see my bed thorns adrift.
कितनी सच्चाई से मुझ से ज़िंदगी ने कह दिया
तू नहीं मेरा तो कोई दूसरा हो जाएगा
How truely life has said clearly to me.
If you aren't mine, someone else 'll be
उदास आँखों से आँसू नहीं निकलते हैं
ये मोतियों की तरह सीपियों में पलते हैं
From sad eyes, a tear hardly ever twirls.
Within oysters, these are groomed as pearls.
दुआ करो कि ये पौदा सदा हरा ही लगे
उदासियों में भी चेहरा खिला खिला ही लगे
Pray that this plant always looks green.
Even if sad, the face retains it's sheen.
यारो नए मौसम ने ये एहसान किए हैं
अब याद मुझे दर्द पुराने नहीं आते
New season has done a favour to me.
Old griefs don't flash in my memory.
मैं यूँ भी एहतियातन उस गली से कम गुज़रता हूँ
कोई मासूम क्यूँ मेरे लिए बदनाम हो जाए
I cross her lane so rare,
that too with care.
Why should innocent bear
my daring stare?
चराग़ों को आँखों में महफ़ूज़ रखना
बड़ी दूर तक रात ही रात होगी
Preserve in your eyes these lamps light.
For so far, there will only be night.
वो इत्र-दान सा लहजा मिरे बुज़ुर्गों का
रची-बसी हुई उर्दू ज़बान की ख़ुश्बू
Like a cassolette, there's my ancestral accent.
Fragrant Urdu language sunk deep in

हम ने तो बाज़ार में दुनिया बेची और ख़रीदी है
हम को क्या मालूम किसी को कैसे चाहा जाता है
I have sold and purchased world in mart.
I know not how to love someone, that art !
मुझे मालूम है उस का ठिकाना फिर कहाँ होगा
परिंदा आसमाँ छूने में जब नाकाम हो जाए
I know it's destiny then, it's plight
When a bird fails to touch sky in flight.
कई साल से कुछ ख़बर ही नहीं
कहाँ दिन गुज़ारा कहाँ रात की
I know not about night and days dears.
Where did I spend time all these years?
वो बड़ा रहीम ओ करीम है मुझे ये सिफ़त भी अता करे
तुझे भूलने की दुआ करूँ तो मिरी दुआ में असर न हो
So generous is my Lord,
let Him this grace award.
When to forget her, I pray
let it not affect that way.
इक दीवार पे चाँद टिका था
मैं ये समझा तुम बैठे हो
Moon placed on a wall was in view
I understood , just seated were you.
अहबाब भी ग़ैरों की अदा सीख गए हैं
आते हैं मगर दिल को दुखाने नहीं आते
Friends have also learned rivals style.
They come, not to hurt heart for a while.
किसी ने चूम के आँखों को ये दुआ दी थी
ज़मीन तेरी ख़ुदा मोतियों से नम कर दे
Someone after a kiss
gave eyes that bliss.
May the Lord wet
earth by pearly tear set.
कभी यूँ भी आ मिरी आँख में कि मिरी नज़र को ख़बर न हो
मुझे एक रात नवाज़ दे मगर इस के बाद सहर न हो
Come this way in my eye
even my view cannot pry.
Serve me just one night
with no morn' in sight.
कई सितारों को मैं जानता हूँ बचपन से
कहीं भी जाऊँ मिरे साथ साथ चलते हैं
Since childhood days, I know many a star.
These travel with me even while going far.
नहीं है मेरे मुक़द्दर में रौशनी न सही
ये खिड़की खोलो ज़रा सुब्ह की हवा ही लगे
Let it be so if no light is in fate.

फिर से ख़ुदा बनाएगा कोई नया जहाँ
दुनिया को यूँ मिटाएगी इक्कीसवीं सदी
God will shape a world of new sort.
Twenty first century will it distort.
ग़ज़लों का हुनर अपनी आँखों को सिखाएँगे
रोएँगे बहुत लेकिन आँसू नहीं आएँगे
I will teach ghazal style to my eyes.
No tear will appear even within cries.
मुझ से क्या बात लिखानी है कि अब मेरे लिए
कभी सोने कभी चाँदी के क़लम आते हैं
What's it that for me is meant.
To write golden, silver pens are sent.
इजाज़त हो तो मैं इक झूट बोलूँ
मुझे दुनिया से नफ़रत हो गई है
If you just allow
I'll tell lie somehow.
I simply hate
world in this state.
मुझे इश्तिहार सी लगती हैं ये मोहब्बतों की कहानियाँ
जो कहा नहीं वो सुना करो जो सुना नहीं वो कहा करो
As banners to advertise
is love tale enterprise.
Listen what isn't said
say where ear hasn't lead.
मैं जिस की आँख का आँसू था उस ने क़द्र न की
बिखर गया हूँ तो अब रेत से उठाए मुझे
I was tear of his eye

from dust pick somehow.
बे-वक़्त अगर जाऊँगा सब चौंक पड़ेंगे
इक उम्र हुई दिन में कभी घर नहीं देखा
My untimely arrival would disarm all.
At day home didn't get my footfall.
बिछी थीं हर तरफ़ आँखें ही आँखें
कोई आँसू गिरा था याद होगा
Eyes were there this way, that way.
Recollect, some tear fell that day.
नाम पानी पे लिखने से क्या फ़ाएदा
लिखते लिखते तिरे हाथ थक जाएँगे
Writing name on water is of no gain.
Your hand will tire in this domain.
मुद्दत से इक लड़की के रुख़्सार की धूप नहीं आई
इस लिए मेरे कमरे में इतनी ठंडक रहती है
Since long it hasn't got sun of a girl's cheek.
That's why my room is bearing cold streak.
तहज़ीब के लिबास उतर जाएँगे जनाब
डॉलर में यूँ नचाएगी इक्कीसवीं सदी
The gentle covers of culture will just unroll.
Dollars of twenty first century 'll take toll.
हज़ारों शेर मेरे सो गए काग़ज़ की क़ब्रों में
अजब माँ हूँ कोई बच्चा मिरा ज़िंदा नहीं रहता
Thousands of my couplets have got a papery grave
I am a mother whose children aren't worth a save.
बहुत दिनों से है दिल अपना ख़ाली ख़ाली सा
ख़ुशी नहीं तो उदासी से भर गए होते
Since long my heart is-an empty lot.
If not pleasure, then grief could trot.
वो शख़्स जिस को दिल ओ जाँ से बढ़ के चाहा था
बिछड़ गया तो ब-ज़ाहिर कोई मलाल नहीं
One whom I liked more than body and heart.
There was no gesture of lament, on his depart
मंदिर गए मस्जिद गए पीरों फ़क़ीरों से मिले
इक उस को पाने के लिए क्या क्या किया क्या क्या हुआ
I visited temple, mosque, met saints of hue.
To acquire him, did everything that was due.
प्यार ही प्यार है सब लोग बराबर हैं यहाँ
मय-कदे में कोई छोटा न बड़ा जाम उठा
None is big or small here, love is around.
In tavern, all are equal, pick cup frm ground.
मान मौसम का कहा छाई घटा जाम उठा
आग से आग बुझा फूल खिला जाम उठा
Listen to the weather, pick cup, clouds are dark
Douse fire with fire, drink for the flower in park.
हाथ में चाँद जहाँ आया मुक़द्दर चमका
सब बदल जाएगा क़िस्मत का लिखा जाम उठा
With moon in hand, your fate will glow.
Fate lines will change with one drink blow.
ये परिंदे भी खेतों के मज़दूर हैं
लौट के अपने घर शाम तक जाएँगे
These birds are also workers in field.
At evening, get back to nest shield.
तुम्हारे घर के सभी रास्तों को काट गई
हमारे हाथ में कोई लकीर ऐसी थी
It cut through all routes of your home.
One line of hand was hard as stone.
इक शाम के साए तले बैठे रहे वो देर तक
आँखों से की बातें बहुत मुँह से कहा कुछ भी नहीं
Under shade of eve', they had sat for long.
Eyes had much to say, lips kept mum strong.
मेरी आँख के तारे अब न देख पाओगे
रात के मुसाफ़िर थे खो गए उजालों में
The stars of my eyes, you won't now find.
Were travellers of night, in light go blind.
यहाँ एक बच्चे के ख़ून से जो लिखा हुआ है उसे पढ़ें
तिरा कीर्तन अभी पाप है अभी मेरा सज्दा हराम है
Written with child blood just read with care.
Our prayers are still sins, even if we dare.
उसे पाक नज़रों से चूमना भी इबादतों में शुमार है
कोई फूल लाख क़रीब हो कभी मैं ने उस को छुआ नहीं
Kissing it with poius glance
Is a prayer of substance.
However near may flower be.
I haven't touched it per se.
वो इंतिज़ार की चौखट पे सो गया होगा
किसी से वक़्त तो पूछें कि क्या बजा होगा
He might have slept waiting on frame.
What's the time, let's know and name.
मिरे साथ चलने वाले तुझे क्या मिला सफ़र में
वही दुख-भरी ज़मीं है वही ग़म का आसमाँ है
Travelling with me what did you get ?
Same sad earth, grief struck sky yet.
दादा बड़े भोले थे सब से यही कहते थे
कुछ ज़हर भी होता है अंग्रेज़ी दवाओं में
Grandpa would simply complain
to each man probably in vain.
A little poison is there
in English drugs somewhere.
न जाने कब तिरे दिल पर नई सी दस्तक हो
मकान ख़ाली हुआ है तो कोई आएगा
None knows when a fresh knock will be there
House is now vacant, sometimes will be there
गले में उस के ख़ुदा की अजीब बरकत है
वो बोलता है तो इक रौशनी सी होती है
In his throat here's a strange divine craft.
When he speaks there is a luminous shaft.
वो अब वहाँ है जहाँ रास्ते नहीं जाते
मैं जिस के साथ यहाँ पिछले साल आया था
Now he is where there's no way ahead.
Last year I came here with her to tread.
हँसो आज इतना कि इस शोर में
सदा सिसकियों की सुनाई न दे
Today, laugh so loud that in the den.
Sounds of sobs one can not listen.
दिन में परियों की कोई कहानी न सुन
जंगलों में मुसाफ़िर भटक जाएँगे
Don't listen to fairy tales during day.
Passengers in jungles 'll get astray.
लोबान में चिंगारी जैसे कोई रख जाए
यूँ याद तिरी शब भर सीने में सुलगती है
As if someone puts in incense an ember prong.
Your memory keeps burning in chest night long.
कोई बादल हो तो थम जाए मगर अश्क मिरे
एक रफ़्तार से दिन रात बराबर बरसे
Had there been clouds would stop but my tears.
Kept showers day 'n nght without changing gears.
कोई फूल सा हाथ काँधे पे था
मिरे पाँव शो'लों पे जलते रहे
On shoulder was a flowery hand.
On embers, feet kept moving trend.
मुझे लगता है दिल खिंच कर चला आता है हाथों पर
तुझे लिक्खूँ तो मेरी उँगलियाँ ऐसी धड़कती हैं
Heart comes on to hand that moves it appears.
While writing to you, fingers throb, mind stears.
फूल बरसे कहीं शबनम कहीं गौहर बरसे
और इस दिल की तरफ़ बरसे तो पत्थर बरसे
Flowers, dew, hailed some precious stones
Towards this heart hailed some simple stones
जिस पर हमारी आँख ने मोती बिछाए रात भर
भेजा वही काग़ज़ उसे हम ने लिखा कुछ भी नहीं
My eyes had spread pearls all through night.
I sent her that page writing nothing for sight.
मेरा शैतान मर गया शायद
मेरे सीने पे सो रहा है कोई
My satan has probably died one piece.
On my chest she is sleeping in peace.
ये शबनमी लहजा है आहिस्ता ग़ज़ल पढ़ना
तितली की कहानी है फूलों की ज़बानी है
Recite ghazal slowly in a dewy style
It's a butterfly story in a flowery guile.
वो माथा का मतला हो कि होंठों के दो मिसरे
बचपन से ग़ज़ल ही मेरी महबूबा रही है
Whether forehead precinct or lips as a couplet
All through the ghazal was my beloved

मैं तमाम तारे उठा उठा के ग़रीब लोगों में बाँट दूँ
वो जो एक रात को आसमाँ का निज़ाम दे मिरे हाथ में
हयात आज भी कनीज़ है हुज़ूर-ए-जब्र में
जो ज़िंदगी को जीत ले वो ज़िंदगी का मर्द है

कमरे वीराँ आँगन ख़ाली फिर ये कैसी आवाज़ें
शायद मेरे दिल की धड़कन चुनी है इन दीवारों में

यूँ तरस खा के न पूछो अहवाल
तीर सीने पे लगा हो जैसे
