फूल ख़ुशबू बिखरते हर सू

और काँटे कभी नहीं खिलते 

फिर भी काँटों की मेहरबानी है

Flowers scatter fragrance all around, 

while the thorns never even bloom.

सम्भलते हैं सम्भलने वाले

My tears clung to darling's hem on fall. 

That's how the fallen rise after fall. 

वो लोग जिन्होंने ख़ूँ देकर 

इस बाग़ को ज़ीनत बख़्शी है 

दो चार से दुनिया वाकिफ़ है 

गुमनाम न जाने कितने हैं

Who who bestowed blood to honour the garden, this land. 

The world knows very few, most are out of recognition band

टूटे हुए पैमानों का

Wine cup breaks promise, promise shatters wine cups. 

Confronting me is a heap of shattered wine cups

हमारा दिल सवेरे का सुनहरा जाम हो जाए

चरागों की तरह आँखें जलें जब शाम हो जाए

उजाले अपनी यादों के हमारे साथ रहने दो

न जाने किस गली में ज़िन्दगी की शाम हो जाए

कल न हो ये कि मकीनों को तरस जाए ये घर

दिल के आसेब का हर एक से चर्चा न करो

जैसे वर्क़-ए-गुल पर अंगारा कोई रख दे

यूँ दस्त-ए-हिनाई पर आँसू अभी टपका है

As an ember is placed on floral sphere. 

On hennaed hands, has dropped a tear

दिल की बस्ती भी शहर-ए-दिल्ली है

जो भी गुज़रा है उस ने लूटा है

City of Delhi and my heart are just the same. 

Whoever has traversed, looted in the game. 

उड़ते उड़ते आस का पंछी दूर उफ़क़ में डूब गया

रोते-रोते बैठ गई आवाज़ किसी सौदाई की

क़तील शफ़ाई

Bird of hope kept flying, in horizon, got lost. 

While crying for long, fanatic ''s voice got lost

कहते हैं उम्र-ए-रफ़्ता कभी लौटती नहीं 

जा मैकदे  से मेरी जवानी उठा के ला

 It's said lost youth never comes back. 

God to the tavern and get my youth pack

एक गुस्ताख़ी करूँगा वो भी मर जाने के बाद 

यार तुम पैदल चलोगे मैं जनाज़े पर सवार 

जाती हुई मय्यत देख तो ली पर देख के भी तुम आ न सके

दो चार क़दम तो दुश्मन भी तकलीफ़ गवारा करते हैं

You watched corpse rally but  joined it not. 

Even enemies take a few steps in such spot. 

मेरे ख़ुदा मुझे थोड़ी सी ज़िंदगी दे दे

उदास मेरे जनाज़े से जा रहा है कोई 

Allot me O Lord ! A little life for a while. 

One is leaving my carcus sad, 'd smile. 

मेरी लाश के सिराहने वो खड़े ये कह रहे हैँ 

इसे नींद यूँ न आती अगर इंतज़ार होता

Standing by my body, she is saying in disdain. 

He wouldn't sleep well, having waited in vain. 

तेरे वादे पर मितमगर अभी और सब्र करते

अगर अपनी ज़िन्दगी का हमें एतबार होता

O torturer! I could wait longer on your hope. 

If I had known , that for it my life would cope

ग़ैर ने तुम को जाँ कहा समझे भी तुम कि क्या कहा

यानी कि बे-वफ़ा कहा जान का एतबार क्या 

To my rival you labelled life, do you know what you have said? 

You have called him disloyal, can life ever 

 be believed as said. 

ग़ज़ब किया तेरे वादे पे ए'तिबार किया 

तमाम रात क़यामत का इंतजार किया 

It was too much to believe in what you said. The night was spent for doom' 's morn' instead 

बाद-ए-मुर्दन कुछ नहीं यह फ़लसफ़ा मरदूद है

 देखिए इंसान को मुर्दा है और मौजूद है

There's nothing after death, this theory is a lie

Look at men, they are there, even when they die

उन की याद आई है साँसों ज़रा आहिस्ता चलो

धड़कनों से भी इबादत में ख़लल पड़ता है

Move slow O breaths, her memory

 is on move. 

Even heart throbs disrupt prayers in

 the groove. 

चूम लेती हैं कभी लब कभी आरिज़-ए-गुल

तूने ज़ुल्फ़ों को बड़ा सर पे चढ़ा रक्खा है

Flowery cheeks it kisses, 

then lips it kisses.

 Heady is your tress,

 so haughty to impress. 

यार-आशना नहीं कोई टकराएँ कि से जाम

किस बे-वफ़ा की याद में ख़ाली सुबू करें

Neither love nor chums, with whom to tinkle cup. 

For which infidel dame, should I gulp the wine cup. 

मै से ग़रज़ निशात है किस रू-सियाह को

इक गूना बे-ख़ुदी मुझे दिन - रात चाहिए 

आया ही था ख़याल कि आँखें छलक पड़ीं

आँसू किसी की याद के कितने क़रीब हैं 

A thought came, eyes oozed out tears.

How near with her memory are tears? 

दिल टूटने से थोड़ी सी तकलीफ़ तो हुई 

लेकिन तमाम उम्र का आराम हो गया

It caused discomfort when the heart broke. 

But a lifetime relief was there in a stroke. 

दिल में किसी के राह किए जा रहा हूँ मैं

कितना हसीं गुनाह किए जा रहा हूँ मैं

I am making inroad in someone ''s heart. 

What a beautiful sin it is , on my part? 

ज़ाहिद शराब पीने दे मस्जिद में बैठ कर

या वो जगह बता दे जहाँ पर ख़ुदा न हो

Let me drink inside mosque O priest! 

Or tell me where he isn't there at least. 

मस्जिद दिखा हिला के दुआ में जो अस्र है

दो घूँट पी वगर्ना औ' मस्जिद को हिलता देख

If there is power in prayers, make the

 mosque shake. 

Or take a few sips and then watch the mosque shake. 

जब वो मेरे क़रीब से हँस कर गुज़र गए

कुछ ख़ास दोस्तों के भी चेहरे उतर गए 

When she passed by me and whisked a  smile. 

Even some close friends didn't bear for a while. 

किसी को क्या हो दिलों की शिकस्तगी की ख़बर

कि टूटने में ये शीशे सदा नहीं करते

Who can keep account of breaking heart? 

 No sound emits as these glasses fall apart

चाह नहीं मैं सुरबाला के गहनों में गूँथा जाऊँ

चाह नहीं मैं चढूँ देव के शीश भाग्य पर इठलाऊँ

मुझे तोड़ लेना वनमाली औ' उस पथ पर देना फेंक

मातृभूमि पर शीश चढ़ाने जिस पथ जाएँ वीर अनेक

To decorate mane of a beautiful dame is not my desire.
