But Diwali is a strange purer festival in it's place. 

हस्ती का नज़ारा क्या कहिए मरता है कोई जीता है कोई 

जैसे कि दिवाली हो कि दिया जलता जाए बुझता जाए..... नुशूर वाहिदी..... 

What to talk about lively scene, one lives, other meets death. 

As if it's Diwali or a lamp, it's aglow or out of breath

आज की रात दिवाली है दिए रौशन हैं 

आज की रात ये लगता है मैं सो सकता हूँ 

..... अज़्म शाकरी..... 

Tonight it's Diwali, lamps are aflame.

Tonight it looks, I can sleep O dame. 

वो दिन भी हाए क्या दिन थे जब अपना भी तअल्लुक़ था 

दशहरे से दिवाली से बसंतों से बहारों से 

..... कैफ़ भोपाली..... 

O what were those days, when I had relations too. 

With Dasehraa, Diwali and springs to woo. 

जो सुनते हैं कि तिरे शहर में दसहरा है

हम अपने घर में दिवाली सजाने लगते हैं 

..... जमुना प्रसाद राही..... 

"It's Dussehra in your city," when  I hear. 

I start decoration for Diwali O dear! 

मेले में गर नज़र न आता रूप किसी मतवाली का 

फीका फीका रह जाता त्यौहार भी इस दीवाली का..... मुमताज़ गुर्मानी.....

If I didn't get have a glimpse in fair, her lovely intoxicating stare. 

This festival though so grand, Diwali would  have been bland. 

दिल में चाहत है जो उस साँवली मतवाली की 

गो मुसलमान हूँ बोल उठता हूँ जय काली की..... अज्ञात..... 

With desire in my heart, black intoxicating from start. 

Although a Muslim, I hail, "victory of Kali" to her avail. 

बीस बरस से इक तारे पर मन की जोत जगाता हूँ 

दीवाली की रात को तू भी कोई दिया जलाया कर..... माजिद - उल-बाक़री.....

Since twenty years on that star, I keep aflame my heart so far

On the night of Diwali O dear, you too kindle a lamp sans fear

है तमाशा-गाह-ए-सोज़-ए-ताज़ा हर यक उज़्व-ए-तन

जूँ चराग़ान-ए-दिवाली सफ़-ब-सफ़ जलता हूँ मैं..... ग़ालिब..... 

Each one of her body part, is theatre of new passion to start

Like Diwali lamps I am alit, 

 line by line and bit by bit. 

आँखें भी हैं रस्ता भी चराग़ों की ज़िया भी 

सब कुछ है मगर कुछ भी सुझाई नहीं देता..... अनवर मसूद..... 

There are eyes, the path, also lamps ablaze. 

Every thing is there,but no visibility in haze. 

मैं ख़याल हूँ किसी और का मुझे सोचता कोई और है 

सर-ए-आईना मिरा अक्स है पस-ए-आईना कोई और है

..... सलीम कौसर..... 

I am someone's else's thought, other is giving me a thought. 

My shadow confronts mirror, someone else is behind mirror.
